Since I sold my massive K3500 and my F150 is getting retired from daily duty soon and most likely will become a project, I’ve started looking at trailers. And since it would be nice to have a car hauler I’ve been looking at those specifically.
What I’ve noticed is that prices seem to be very tight. You can buy this new 20' trailer pictured above for under $3k out the door.
Anything on craigslist in decent shape is listed at $2-2.5k....why anyone would buy one for that and not spend that little bit more for a new one is beyond me.
Anything under $1500 seem to be junk that you’d end up spending another grand or two just getting into decent shape again.
But everyone knows what they have, right?

I have been looking for a while and noticed the same thing. I watched a seventeen year old 18' aluminum trailer in a field sell at auction for $5,800, a new one is $7,000. I can’ t figure it out.

I noticed the same thing this last spring. Was only looking at used because I didn’t think I could afford new. Way cheaper than I thought they would be based on looking at used prices.

Yea, it’s really weird and I can’t figure it out. Hell, my father in law bought an enclosed trailer brand new and sold it a year or two later for enough to actually make some money on it after taxes/registration/etc.

I mean, $2000 is less than $3000 right? So if the $2000 one meets your needs, why pay $3k? Maybe the used one will wear out faster, but there’s a lot less to go wrong with a trailer than a car so I don’t think its surprising they hold their value better.

One thing you’re missing is how much trai ler prices vary. Its all a matter of how far away you are from Ga.-where 90% are made. I’m from Ct. When someone up here wants to buy a new trailer, You star t doing the math. A trailer you’d get your best dealer price up here for $6k Is $50 00 in Va.-or you can pick it up at the factory for $3800. I know multiple people w ho’ve taken the ride-or cut a deal to bring something back to split the costs. I was in the ‘doing the math stage’ when I found good deal on a good used one only one state away.
So-you have a used (bought up north) trailer. How much you willing to lose on it to compete with others for sale? Wanna take a 40% hit?
Thats why trailer prices are all over the place. Shipping shipping shipping.

I have noticed this as well. I've been trying to find a cheap but decent utility trailer. Anytime a genuine deal gets posted, it's gone within three hours.

This is pretty much how the open (steel frame ) car trailer market works in my area, too. Anything used in reasonable condition that isn’t a project in and of itself is $1500-$2000, which isn’t very far off the cost of new trailer. Between this fact and knowing exactly what I wanted, that’s how trailerlopnik happened last year. Assuming this is for project cars on the sporty (and low clearance) side of things, a dove tail rear end should be a requirement on a trailer. I had an straight deck in the past, and it was a pain in the ass. D rop axles are nice, too. Anything you can do to lower the deck will make life easier with race /sports cars. Torsion axles are nice, but not a requirement.
